No offense intended, but it seems as though most answerers have a memory that doesn't reach back any further than 'Titanic" or "Lord of the Rings." That's sad but I guess to be expected.
Of living directors I think my favorite is Ang Lee. I love Stanley Kubrick too, aNOOb--the movie "Barry Lyndon" is a favorite of mine and underappreciated. Also John Huston, Alfred Hitchcock-- too many...

Ron Howard. He played Opie on the Andy Griffith show back in the 60's, has been around for years on the Hollywood scene.
Directed Apollo13, Backdraft, A Beautiful Mind...to name a few.
