Maybe it is my denial that spurs it, or my love for the Dodgers....either way any information would be helpful. The answer is right in front of me but I just dont get it

Actually it has to do with head to head win-loss against each other. Then it's which team has the best win-loss record within the division. If that is tied then they look at run differential between both clubs. And it goes on and on. There are a host of tied breakers that can be used to determine the winners of each division.

Tie breaker is head to head record. Which the Padres beat the Dodgers more times.

This same thing happened last year with the Red Sox and Yankees. The team that had the best record against the other is the champ the other is the wildcard.

Tie Breaker 1st one is Head to Head matchup, the Padres must have won more than L.A.
