I find nothing wrong with fanfics (about anime, books or anything else). I think they give deep insight into the mind of the fan who created it, and what the fan is thinking or thinking up. You also get to see a different side to the the characters that you know and love (or hate). Fanfics are a great way to take a "break" from the original story and take on a new path. Fanfics also help fans interact with eachother. I also think that they are a good way to find upcoming writers. In my opinion, fanfics are great! And I love reading them too, as long as they have some sort of plot. But there are always fanfics out there that have NO plot and that are useless. It all depends on the writer, and their ability to make up a scenario and create a good fanfic out of it.
I myself do not create fanfics. But I am working on a couple of original stories :)

.-. I write (wrote, in the process of writing) Harry Potter fanfiction. I think it's fine.
I hate anime fanfics though, except for a few ones about Gundam Wing.
No idea. Love HP fanfics, hate anime fanfics.
I guess it's cause HP, you only see things from one persons perspective, so you can give the details of other characters without completely blowing the canon.
Most of the time, Anime fanfics are out of cannon.

Writing a good fan fic is really hard. If you love a show or whatever, it's hard to be creative, live up to expectations and keep within the story lines. I've only done one because I've read so many that are just horrible and ditch the story line entirely.
But there are good ones out there! It's just hard to find some of them. I'm all for fan fics if they're well written and keep within a story line.

I think they're fine and they very much help an anime series' fanbase to grow and thrive. Many series leave their viewer wanting more. Without anymore type of entertainment in that brand, the fan base can slowly fade away as they get into different series. But fanfics definitely helps build and maintain a community.

This is not a weird placement. Fandoms overlap. Which is why I'm going to answer as an old timey science fiction fan. There has always been good fanfiction. Sandra Marschalk got her start writing Star Trek pastiches. Heck, Marion Zimmer Bradley's The Bloody Sun (EDIT: It was Sword of Aldones) began as a Henry Kuttner pastiche and out of it developed Darkover, which (deservedly) inspired its own fanfiction. Good writing, though, is always difficult to find. The story behind Sturgeon's Law supposedly (and I'm censoring) is Ted Sturgeon was at a bar at an SF convention where someone came up to him and said, "90% of science fiction is crud". "90% of everything is crud" he shot back and that is remembered as Sturgeon's law. Even professional writers will change things. Reading Randall Garrett's Lord Darcy stories is fun. Reading them after having read mystery series like Rex Stout's Nero Wolfe or Agatha Christie's Hercules Poirot is quite an experience, as he's translated them into his alternate universe with (usually) great success. Recently Mercedes Lackey has been paying homage to older fiction: read Dorothy Sayers's -- ooh, Gaudy Night -- then read Lackey's The Wizard of London. There are other books one may think of but Lord Peter is who comes to mind. With so much fanfiction out there, there's good stuff out there. I've even read a few good Harry Potter stories. It usually takes a LOT of patience to find it, but it's out there.

Its like anything else--there are some really well written fan fics that I really enjoy, but you need to pick through the really bad ones to find the good.
I am a fan of Sailor Moon, Harry Potter and X-Files fan fics mostly. I don't write them (I've tried, I'm just too lazy to commit to them!) but I like reading them. I agree, though--its not fun to read through 10 bad ones to find 1 good, but then I stick with that author!
