I tend to do this but not intentionally. I just withdraw to think things through or work through my feelings. It also allows me to cool off if necessary. The intentional silent treatment is very cruel and what my mother used as a means of control. I would never use this. Usually when I am quiet I tell the other person that I just need some time to myself.

With the silent treatment comming from Me, the whole family knows IM passed pissed off. People try to make Me laugh and I give them either this blank expression or clentch My jaws and glare at them. They usually back away slowly. lol . I am a redhead, and usually speak My mind fully, but If I ever get really really quiet...thats the time to watch out.

It can be used for good or evil....:)
If someone keeps yelling at you and insulting you over and over they just want you to interact with them to give them something/anything to fuel the fire. So the use of the silent trtmnt in that case is effective as they will eventually give up..the fire will burn out, if you will.
But when someone is wanting to have a reasonable conversation with you and you refuse to participate by not talking that is called "withholding" and that is a form a verbal abuse. It is a way for you to win and not be their equal because you refuse to participate. You think you win but in the end you lose because no woman/man will put up with that for too long.
Wow...I totally got into that answer...You can just call me DOCTA Pink!

I find the silent treatment is passive-aggressive and childish so I try not to do it. I try to talk things out.

Well I think it is nothing more than avoidance. Anger is not a deadly sin, that is why the good lord gave it to us. When we are angry be aware. It means that we feel out rights are violated, that we are doing more than we can comfortably do, our boundaries are being invaded, or that simply things are not right. Anger is your allie when you understand how to use it in constructive ways.
