I payed for an expert and the results were not that good. I think a do it yourself is better. That way you will know how the horse is trained.
You could use an experienced rider to help you.

Pay a pro. If you don't know what you're doing with horses, no video is going to teach you. Someone trying to train a horse that doesn't know how, he's going to mess it up. You can do something once and teach a horse a bad habit or behavior that a real trainer would then have to spend weeks or months trying to train back out.
A kid should be starting out with a gentle horse that knows what it's doing, not something that's being trained from scratch. For the safety of the kid and the horse both, pay a pro.

Most likely you aren't an overly experienced horse person if you are asking this. THAT'S OKAY! Everybody has to start somewhere. The best course of action is to have a knowledgeable horse person (like a trainer) help you to find a good, quiet, older horse. If you want something quiet and safe for your child, don't be scared to look for one in their teens. It would also be very beneficial to have your child take lessons on the horse. That way they can really get solid riding basics and it will be good for the horse too. Dn't buy a young horse and let it "grow up" with your child. Green horses + green riders=disaster.

It depends on how well you know horses and how well you can ride. Not trying to be rude but if you have to ask then you probably need to get a professional's help. Make sure the trainer teaches the horse things that will apply to what you use him for. You dont want to take the horse to a trainer and he teach him how to rope if you want to teach the horse how to jump.
