Because it's easy to understand.
The common cold virus is something quite complex, which even modern scientists haven't been able to cure. Do you really expect parents to take their time to explain every aspect of it to a 5 year old (per se). The truth is, extreme changes in temperature leave human beings more susceptible to either get sick or show symptoms of a virus than a constant temperature. Besides this fact and telling their kids to wash their hands constantly, that's as much as a parent can do to prevent, treat and cure a cold. Now, most people are right by telling their kids that if they stay away from a cold weather and keep their hands clean they'll stay away from colds as much as possible, unless they seal them in an oxygen bubble. Stop arguing with your mother and thank her for raising you to be a good addition to society instead.

Actually they can be caused by both. Now just think for a moment, what is the cause of cold weather? Rain? Winter? Kids go out to play in them, come in sneezing, sniffling...catch a cold! And yes, it would be easier to explain it to kids that way, so they can see, and relate ( learn ) from it, and not to go out to play...go out, get sick. The virus is much more complicated...it's from contact from something or somebody...to explain it to a kid may take some time.

Because it is partially true. When you got out in the cold and you are not properly dressed your body will produce more mucus that makes it hard to get rid of a cold virus and then you will get sick. So while it is true that it is the virus that makes you sick and not the weather not being dressed properly will make you more likely to get a cold if you are exposed to the virus.

Because, cold weather is easier to explain than a virus. You obviously don't have kids.

Yeah - good question. And how about sitting in a draught? But I remember once when I was hot and sweaty after sport, I didn't put a jacket on - and then I caught a cold. Co-incidence?

your mother is kinda right
when the weather is cold the body works harder to keep it's warmth so it's defences gets a little weaker leading to a weaker immune system so it gets easier to catch a cold maening that cold is a stress factor
Sorry 4 boring you
