Do you need an audience?

Do you make music for yourself or others?

Is it just a trade for making a living?

It is tempting to say "if you have to ask then you wouldn't understand" but that would be unfair.

So, some people play to emulate a hero. Some play to express themselves. Some play to relax. Some play to "get" girls (not a winning strategy in my experience). Some play because they just have to.

Hardly any of us play for the money - unless you are right up there, you will be doing well to break even on a gig and a lot of bands make a loss on tour.

I'm a real "Professional Musician" been making a living off it for the past 12 years.

I play covers of other peoples music and yes you do have to learn songs that you wouldn't normally really be into but the audience like them and so you keep them happy to get re booked again.

I can play without an audience for my own amusement but really do enjoy interacting with an audience.

If you enjoy playing I can't think of a better way to earn money!

It's just something we love and we write and play music when we feel stressed or need to have something written done, kind of like expressing your feelings.. I don't really need an audience, it's cool to have people listen to you and enjoying what you've created but it's not a need. I make music for myself, but some people do it for others. It's just kind of cool to make a living of something you love, you can make money by doing something you love!! But there are people who do it just for the fame which is stupid.

Nope you do not need an audience..I like to do it because it's another way to express myself. I have played for other people in the past but I like to noodle around mostly (on the guitar and sing) It's a hobby for me rather than a way to make money.

I play guitar, sing, and write my own songs...I do it for the joy of making music, music is my passion! I don't need an audience but I certainly love a crowd who enjoys my songs. The money is just an extra for me so far... of course I wouldn't mind makin a livin just off singin!

I use music as a way to unleash all my pent up emotions and just play, from the heart. It's kind of like when you talk to someone when you have something on your mind -- when the conversation's over you feel refreshed, like everything is out in the open. This is what music feels like to me and that's my motivation for playing.

I play guitar just for the sheer thrill of being able to do it.
I sing because it feels good.
I write songs because it's better than learning someone else's.

Mostly I just play for my dog and my boyfriend. But when I went guitar shopping last week, while I was trying guitars on (playing them) people were asking me if I was in a band and where could they come see me perform. That was ego-pumping. Made me think I might go puff myself up on purpose sometime.
