Buy a dictionary, and check the closet... I bet there are moth balls in there somewhere.

New in the house?
Check under your house, in the crawl space.
Moth balls are sometimes used, under houses, to deter snakes.
Don't know if it works on snakes, but I can imagine the smell wafts up into the house.

after you reconsider that typing and spelling course try to figure out where and what changes in your routine/furnishings/etc. that may have caused this. Is it a new house? Closed or opened anythting like a spare room or attic recently? Try www.diynet.com ater you narrow it down.
