I just read something in Jpost about giving a dollar to each homeless person even if they have beer in their hands. How many people agree with this? Thanks

I disagree because you work hard for your money to just give it away freely with no purpose or reason, so screw that.

Since I haven't read the article you are referring to, then it would be nice to view it as it was written. Judging from the little information you have given, I'd have to say NO, I DON"T AGREE! I have been homeless & I didn't drink alcohol & neither did most of the other people that I saw, so that's an unfair generalization of the homeless community. What is the point of giving a homeless person a dollar? Believe it or not, they don't all want it OR need it! Perhaps if they ask OR if they seriously seem to need it, like for bus fare, then I say give it if you feel you WANT to help them. No one should ever feel like they HAVE to give anything to anyone. It should always come from the heart & have no animosisty or strings attached. I have noticed that many of the homeless who do drink alcohol seem to calm down once they have had their "fix" of alcohol. Many others drink only when they are out of drugs & the alcohol takes the edge off until they can find more drugs. Unfortunately, most of them don't care what kind of drug it is, just as long as they can get some type of a high from it! It was a learning experience watching people destroy themselves & having absolutely no regard for anything or anyone. These people would usually assault a person who handed them a dollar, as that seemed to be an insult to them, rather than an act of kindness. Why not have a collection for those dollars & donate them to an agency or church that could use the money to help the homeless. Many private agencies & religious organizations are in need of a helping hand in order to continue to feed people & collect & distribute the food to all those in need. It's your money. Use it wisely because YOU could be in need someday & chances are getting slimer that there will be agencies in place to help you out!

Many homeless people are mentally ill, but since budgets are balanced by cutting social programs and closing state psychiatric institutions, they are out on the street and cannot take care of themselves.
It should not matter what the person does with the money, it's the giving and caring that counts. You do it as much for yourself as for the beggar.
Ever thought of taking a homeless person for lunch. I did once and learning about his life was an eye-opener. I was happy to discover he got a job the following week. Somebody believed in him enough to give him a chance, even though he lived under a bridge.
I ask myself, What would Christ do?

I have to tell this story I heard in Californian last year.
A man was accosted by a panhandler while walking down the street who asked him for some spare change. The man replied, "I could use a bit of that myself."
The panhandler asked, "How much do you need?"
"Oh, about $10,000," the man replied.
The panhandler put his hand in his pocket and pulled out a roll of bills, then proceeded to peel off $10k and hand them to the man." Have a nice day! as they say in California.

bad idea. Not to say that all homeless people are dishonest or crack addicts but its best to give them food or some form of necessity directly. The ones who are honest people with crappy luck will appreciate it, the rest may be disappointed but u still did them a favour. The druggies obviously cant handle the money for themselves so why give it straight to them?

I gave someone a couple of bucks in Grand Central Station, he said he hadn't had anything to eat, I walked away, went about 10 feet turned around and I saw this guy went straight into a deli and bought beer. I asked him, what about the food? he said "bleep you" and walked away. I haven't given anyone anything since.

I don't think it accomplishes much.
It would be so much better to donate a dollar to a charity that works on finding housing, medical treatment, clothing and jobs for the homeless.

Don't do it. You'll go broke and then you'll be homeless too.
