The real question here is was it suicide or homicide? Did you question any of the other leaves to find out if they were pushed or jumped of their own free will? And when is the burial?

Oh yes, they are definatly pushed off. I actually saw the knomes climbing up there one night and was pushing each and every leaf on the tree. I yelled "hey what are you doing?" and they all got quiet, then I hit them with the flashlight, and that's when we had a talk. They told me of all these hobbits, faeries, and little people that actually climb into the tress every fall and push each leaf off. They asked me to keep this a secret., but I found this so amazing that I have, until you asked the question...so I figured YOU just had to of seen this or you would not have worded it that way..So we both know the "secret" now!!!

a membrane at the attachment point hardens when frost hits it.

at first the leaf may stay attaches to the tree, but the sugars made in the leaf cannot go back into the tree, and create the fall colors.

Then, because it is brittle, the joint separates. Avery similar mechanism can be seen in a tomato plant, if a flower is not fertilized, the joint snaps, and the flower falls of. If it is pollinated, hormones from the developing fruit make the joint get stronger.

When the gravitational forces are higher than its holding force in the tree it falls. This is what Newton or Galileo found from the apple tree.I do not remember correct name When the fruit ripes it looses its holding strength . Then the gravitational force attracts it towards earth. The same is the cause for leaves The force of the air helps to accelerate the process.

fall off on their own because they're dead and have no life in them to cling onto the branch. But the wind helps to speed up the process.

I believe they fall off, they just get fragile, and crisp and just "get old" and fall off.
