I was supposed to watch "Wag the Dog" for my history class (which is about civilizations prior to 1648, so whatever) but I couldn't get a hold of it (seriously - small town 30 students 2 copies of the movie). Could you sum it up for me? Thanks!

A president engineers a war to deflect attention from a sex scandal. It came out just before the Clinton impeachment.

You never see the President, I don't think. Robert DeNiro and Dustin Hoffman are his advisers, who gin up the war on a soundstage.

It's really funny - dark humor.

Wag the Dog is a 1997 film starring Dustin Hoffman, Robert De Niro and Anne Heche about a Washington spin doctor (De Niro) who distracts the electorate from a presidential sex scandal by hiring a Hollywood producer (Hoffman) to create a fake war. The scheme enlists the musical talents of Mark Knopfler (musical producer) & Willie Nelson (who creates a theme song for the 'war'). Denis Leary, Kirsten Dunst, Woody Harrelson (as the fabricated Lieutenant Kije-like "Schumann") and William H. Macy also appear.

Wag the Dog was produced and directed by Barry Levinson. Hilary Henkin and David Mamet co-wrote the screenplay. The film is based on the novel American Hero by Larry Beinhart. The book, however, differs greatly from the picture. In it the president is specifically George Herbert Walker Bush and the fake war operation is explicitly Desert Storm.

Wag the dog is not a historian movie,,,

After being caught in a scandalous situation days before the election, the president does not seem to have much of a chance of being re-elected. One of his advisors (DeNiro) contacts a top Hollywood producer (Hoffman) in order to manufacture a war in Albania that the president can heroically end, all through mass media.
