Treat this as a coumpound interest problem.

P=1120
i=.27
n= 4

A=P*(1+i)^n = 1120*(1+.27)^4 = 2914

First of all the question is ambiguous as stated,
First week 1120 cases
Second week 1422.41422
Third week 1806.428
Fourth week 2293.63296
I did not see any instructions about rounding out the answers.
If a teacher is going to assign a problem of this type, he or she should make sure that there are no decimals. How can anyone have a part of an epidemic.
I readily understand why you are confused by this problem; Looking at it another way. I call this "Busy Work" because nothing can be learned by working this problem.
Remember a persentage is a decimal 20 percent of something is 2 tenths of that something. and so on.
To make the problen more understandable look below:
To run the series: call the base number "A"
A = 1120

A + .27A = B Second week
B + .27B = C Third week
C + .27C = D Fourth week

This was a bummer wasn't it

To find out what 27% of 1120 is -- multiply 1120 by .27

add the result to 1120 and you have week 2.

take the result and multiply by .27 and add the new result to your first result -- and you have total for week 3.

I think you get the idea.

Start with 1120 and multiply by .27, then add that to 1120 to find the number at the end of week 1. Then take that answer, multiply by .27 and add back to week 1's answer to find the total at the end of week 2. Repeat this process for weeks 3 and 4.

multiply 1120 to 0.27 (decimal form of 27%)
the product is 302.4
add the product to 1120: 1120 + 302.4 = 1422.4 this is the cases reported per week
multiply 1422.4 to 4 : 5689.6 this would be the number of cases reported in Dallas after 4 weeks of the epidemic

2913

1120 x .27 = 302
302+1120 = 1422
1422 x .27 = 384
1422 + 384 = 1806
1806 x .27 = 488
1806 + 488 = 2294
2294 x .27 = 619
2294 + 619 = 2913

week 1: 1120
week 2: 1120 x 0.27 = 302.4 + 1120 = 1422.4
week 3: 1422.4 x 0.27 = 384.04 + 1422.4=1806.44
week 4: 1806.44 x 0.27 = 487.73 + 1806.44 = 2294.17
(FYI: week 5: 2294.17 x 0.27 = 619.42 + 2294.17 = 2913.59)

About 2294 cases would be reported by the end of the fourth week of the epidemic, and about 2914 after week five.

i dont know how some of the people who answered before me got to their answers but there wrong i shall explain it to you and show you how its worked out here goes......

week 1

1120 cases divide by 100% multiplied by 27% will show you how many more cases have been reported.

1120/100x27=302.4 more cases

1120 original cases plus the 302.4 new cases equals 1422.4 cases after week 1

week2

1422.4 cases divide by 100% multiplied by 27% will show you how many more cases have been reported.

1422.4/100x27=384.048 more cases

1422.4 cases after week 1plus the 384.048 new cases equals 1806.448 cases after week 2

week3

1806.448 cases divide by 100% multiplied by 27% will show you how many more cases have been reported.

1806.448/100x27=406.09296 more cases

1806.448 cases after week 2 plus the 406.09296 new cases equals 2212.54096 cases after week 3

week 4

2212.54096 cases divide by 100% multiplied by 27% will show you how many more cases have been reported.

2212.54096/100x27=597.3860592 more cases

2212.54096 cases after week 3 plus the 597.3860592 new cases equals 2809.9270192 cases after week 4

so the answer is 2809 cases

this is defintely the write answer

the reason why some people got to the answer 2913 is because the rounded the percentage up instead of using the decimals which you obviously cant do good luck
