When you crave dirt, clay ashes or ice it means that you are low on iron. She might need to take a iron supplement. She's probably anemic from the pregnancy she needs to go to the doctor and tell him. anemia can be very serious in pregnancy for mommy and baby.

this is a condition during pregnancy called Pica. It is when a woman is missing certain minerals in her diet and she craves things like dirt, clay or even laundry detergent to make up for these minerals. Alot of women even eat these things while pregnant. Basically when pregnant, the body craves things that it needs and is missing. hope this helps!

Please do not think i am crazy,i'm just a normal suburban housewife(i'm not too sure how sane that actually is considered anymore!!!)I had a craving for dirt as well, i would eat rocks just because i craved the taste.Of course that resulted in 2 root canals!!!It can happen though,my doctor told me it means your body is lacking something.I took vitamins and all but couldn't curve the craving.I had the baby and i'm normal again,i think?I'm not craving dirt anymore.

Some pregnant women get weird cravings like that. It isn't known why.
I used to crave ice chips all the time at the end of my pregnancy.

I have had terrible cravings for metal shavings. It is called PICA, just as someone said above. And it's from my body not getting specific nutrients that I need.

It means she needs iron. I know it sounds silly, and I'm glad I didn't have that craving, but it's actually more common then you'd think.

well the reason she was craving for dirt was for the nutrients that dirt has, when my sister was pregenant she craved for red clay and the doctor told us because of the nutrients that is in it.
