Heat of Combustion = Energy released / mass of substance (Hc = E/m).
Also:
E = specific heat of water * change in temperature * mass of water (E = Hs * T * m)

Step 2: Using the information given about mass and temperature change of the water to determine the energy released:
E = 4184 J / (kg * C) * 20 degrees * .05 kg = 4184 J

Step 3: Plug the energy released in to the first equation to determine Hc.
E = Hc * m
Hc = E / m
Hc = 4184 J / 5 g
Hc = 836.8 J/g (solution!)
