You're not giving enough information. Assuming we're talking
the standard pool length is about 33 1/3 meters, which means
swimming 3 lengths=100 meters. 500 yards=457.2 metres.
3*4.572=13.716 lengths of the pool. You have to tell us how
much one pool length is, or we can't tell you the exact answer.

This depends on the size of the pool.
If its a 25 yard pool, yes 20 times down and back
If it is a 50 yard pool, only 10 times back and forth
Here is the equation so you can figure it out.
500/ 100 = 5 x 4 lengths 20 lengths
Distance/100 = a x 4 for a 25 yard pool.
Usually you refer to from one end to the other, a length. Down and back is usually a lap.

First off, the correct measurement is meters. Secondly, you are correct in a 25 meter pool.
25 meters = 1 lap
50 meters = 2 laps
100 meters = 4 laps
200 meters = 8 laps
500 meters = 20 laps
1000 meters = 40 laps
approx. 64 laps = 1 mile
Hope that helps.
