Because it's one of the better colours for preventing light penetrating through the bottle and into the liquid or tablets therein, and light can (i) oxidise, (ii) heat, and (iii) maybe do other less probable things that will disturb the chemical integrity of the contents. That's one reason why they usually tell you to keep medicines etc. in cool dark places (as well as being away from little prying fingers etc.)

They come in many colors, but that is the most common. I'm not sure why.
Many medications deteriorate in light so commonly such containers are generally quite dark. Some, like nitroglycerin are dispensed in opaque bottles because they are even more sensitive to light.
