Prokaryotes- this question possibly relates to the now accepted hypothesis that small microorganisms through symbiosis came to collectively create the eukaryotic system, including mitochondria, organelles, nucleus, etc. The idea is that separate simpler organisms gave way to much more complex cells through a process of evolutionary co-development and biochemical interdependence.

this is a hard one. i guess you're looking for a one word answer. if so, i'd have to say "phagocytes". these are single cells that engulf and digest materials.

i could also say "mitochondria". these are cell organelles that contain DNA of their own. Maybe they were swallowed up by phagocytes and the two worked together quite well.
