any dark leaf follage dose not need a lot of sunlight the lighter the follage the more sun it needs ,try some small grass plants in tubs the do well in shade cordyline is a favorite and bamboo but this needs pruning back every so often but it alos hides a unsightley space you wish to cover palms are also nice and some what calming any sort of lily will grow in tubs also , geraniums also add nice colour to any patio

You will have to decide things like amount of sun, shade, available water, etc... Try your local nursery. Generally, you can get just about anything to grow, someplace, it just depends on the amount of work you want to put into the project, short term, and long term. Go around your neighborhood, and see what else is growing in your neighbors yards, and note sun/shade exposure, flowering plants, etc...

Where do you live? What zone......
My most VERY favourite potted patio plant that will tolerate shade ( buts needs good light - is a Brugmansia. But again, would need to know your zone to give good answer????????

Hosta's Impatiens and Caladiums are good choices.I have a northern exposure on my balcony and they do fantastic All are low upkeep too....Good Luck !

Try begonia's as they are very shade tolerant and have pretty flowers as well as nice greenery.
