A doctor will do it earlier than that if there is a medical reason -- and I know that some doctors are doing C-sections more often, but I would caution you to think it is an "easier" way to have a baby. I had a c-section because my son was breech and I had high blood pressure in the last weeks before his birth.
A c-section is *major* surgery -- and it takes time to heal. If you have support at home, a spouse or relative that will be helping you for the first couple of weeks that would be good. You won't be able to lift anything for a few weeks, you will have to watch stairs because of the stiches, you will need to have someone drive you places for the first couple of weeks. If you are taking time off from work -- you need at least 2 weeks more than the normal 6 (something I didn't do, and still regret). If you are nursing it won't effect the nursing, but you may, depending on your pain tolerance, have issues on getting comfortable (I have a pretty high pain tolerance, and didn't need many pain pills -- was also afraid what they would do to the baby.
If you are planning to have more than one child - multiple c-sections can make the abdomen walls weaker.
A c-section is an awesome thing when baby and/or mama is in distress -- but it takes a toll on you and your body -- you baby won't be able to push all of the fluids from its lungs as it would when it goes the way nature intended. Birth is a scary thing, I know, and if you want a c-section, you have a right to one. But I think it's important that women understand the risks involved, too.
congratulations on your baby. take it easy -- and be sure to sleep when the baby sleeps!

You really shouldn't have a C-section unless it's medically necessary. I'm not a natural childbirth purist: I had 2 C-sections myself due to preeclampsia and a skeletal deformity. But here are a few things to think about:
A study came out a few weeks ago that showed that, even after they corrected for risk factors, mothers who deliver by C-section are three times more likely to die during or immediately after childbirth than mothers who deliver vaginally.
Their babies are also at a higher risk of death and complications.
Also, there's an epidemic of prematurity. 1 in 8 babies is now born premature. And some of that is due to mothers/doctors scheduling C-sections or inducing early. Remember, your due date is just an estimate, and it can be off by two weeks in either direction. So maybe your baby will really be 38 weeks when you think you're 38 weeks. Heck, maybe the baby will even be 40 weeks. But the baby could also be 36 weeks. And babies born early are at a huge risk of complications and health issues. We're all told that we're full-term at 37 weeks, but a new study showed that even babies born at 38 weeks had significantly more acute and chronic health issues than their peers born at 40 weeks, and their health care costs are astronomical.
Now, everyone's going to write in and say, "My baby arrived at 32 weeks [or 37, or 34, or whatever] and he/she's just fine." And that's probably true. My kids came at 37 and 38 weeks, and they don't have cerebral palsy or chronic lung problems or anything like that. But the overall statistical picture isn't rosy.
Anyway, unless you have a medical issue, that baby is better in than out for the full 40 weeks of gestation.
And C-sections SUCK, but you didn't ask about that....

I had my c-section at 38 weeks. They will not sectionn any early than that. They want to make sure the baby has a suck reflex and that is not developed well until the 36 or 37 week.

he probably could, but more than likely won't unless you or the baby are in some sort of jeporady. going longer is better than shorter so that the baby is fully developed.
