It does not matter if they float, they are still getting swished around and the water and soap are doing their job. So carry on - it works.

It will weigh them down, but that area might not get clean. Put the weight inside the shoe in the toes area. You don't need a lot of weight, once the shoe is full of water it should stay under. Check it during the rinse cycle. Don't wash the shoes alone, throw in some towels on top to keep shoes in water and add baking soda with the soap to help get out the smell as well as clean them.

I have 3 ways to wash my shoes:
1. Wash by hand using soap detergent and water.
2. Stick them in washing machine
3. Stick them into the Dishwasher (make sure the shoelaces are off)
All work very well depending on the amount of dirt/grime on them.
Good Luck.

When I wash my kids shoes, I mix them in with towels or denim. Those heavier items seem to help the load mix up well. Weights might throw off your washing machine balance in the spin cycle.

Do them by hand. Spray them with 409, add some detergent, brush them good and rinse. Repeat until clean. They will air dry but to speed the process along, stuff with tissue paper which will also help them keep their shape.

I prefer hand wash....
-sprinkle water
-use a toothbrush in brushing dirt away
-use a dishwashing liquid --- deluted in water to have a milder soap that doesn't hurt the color....
-rinse with running water
-GOOD LUCK!

Put them in with towels they usually clean that way the towels weigh them down for quite a while, enough time to clean them.

You need something heavier, like a brick.
