I'm a middle-aged woman and a lifelong non-smoker. My sister started smoking in high school, was smoking two packs a day at one point, and now goes through at least a pack a day. We share a condo and sometimes I wake in the night to hear her coughing -- a horrible, gagging sound that goes on for up to half an hour at a time; and it's much, much worse when she gets a cold. I worry about her.

I'm a smoker, have been for 15 yrs. It's a nasty habit. Makes your breathe and clothes smell like ash trays. Over and over again, I have tried to quit, only to go back to it when I was stress and be stuck on it again. I wouldn't advise anyone to start smoking. If they so chose to, that's on them, but I would also let them know, that in the mornings the cravings for a cigarette, are almost as bad as the need to use the restroom, and smoking causes that "smokers cough". Sometimes coughing hard, so hard that it makes your throat and stomach hurt. Smoking has caused Me to have a yearly bout of bronchitis. That sucks majorly because every year, between November, and Feb. at some point I come down with it. Bronchitis if not taken care of with antibiotics can cause Pnomea(sp). One year, I refused to have it dealt with and landed in the hospital. I stayed on antibiotics for 3 wks. Heh, and ..*sighs* I still do it. Gotta smoke right after I eat, doesn't matter if I have had one while fixing food, its like something happens when I eat that triggers the need for a ciggy right afterwords. Heh, and of course there's that wonderful ciggy right after intimate relations. I understand and know that ciggies rule My life in a way, but the addiction grips Me tightly. To break that grip is hard to say the least.

I hope I have helped

Smoking can put chemicals in your bloodstream that not only are addictive and cancerous, but also prevent sleeping properly. If I smoke a cigar, then that night I don't sleep well, and the next day I not only have trouble functioning effectively at work, but I am also at risk for falling asleep while driving. Hope that helps.

Although i`m not a smoker, the nature of my work means that i often see the long term effects of what is an increasingly anti-social habit. this varies (in younger years) from foul smelling breath (breath fresheners etc just don`t work) to equally foul smelling clothes. smokers are rightly sent out in all weathers to satisfy their habit, which increases the risks of early chest problems such as pneumonia and often severe colds. In later years (40+) many smokers experience the early onset of chronic chest problems that can plague them in later years. This can be seen as smokers have a higher risk of contracting chest infections, and suffer from breathing problems upon exertion. Shortness of breath, emphysema, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (c.o.p.d) and Chronic bronchitis are a factor that requires the smoker to need oxygen in order to assist their breathing. Lung cancer is also an increased risk for people in this group. Some of these will be refered to by a doctor as "chronic chest". other potential effects include an increased risk of pulmonary embolisms and several other coronary problems. C.V.A`s (strokes) T.I.A`s (mini strokes) are classified as life threatening, and have often been a result of a persons lifestyle.

I often see this when i am in work, it`s not a pretty sight, espescially if the patient ends up in intensive care. there, if they were to see all the tar as it was being pumped out off their lungs - the dark foul smelling liquid would surely put many off smoking.

smoking is bad for you. you shouldn't smoke. it makes your lungs all dark and durty. marjiwana is bad for you. don't do marjiwana. (quote south park!! )

it can kill you. it gets tar and nicotine stuck in your lungs so your lung gets clogged and you can't breat and you get lung cancer! i touched a pig's lung that has been infected by smoke! they dumped it in nicotine! it smelled and it had a bug hard lump.

anyway. there are alot of really good sites to check out! heck! you can even ask your parents! you know what teachers really like: interview someone you know who smokes. ask him/her :

how long have you been smoking.
how does it make you feel
have you had any medical issues smoking
have you tried to quit
how much different do you feel from when/before you stated
are you worried about your health

etc!!

good luck! hope you get an A+

Smoking effects me by giving me a chance to get away from everone. All the people who don't want smoking in the workplace or the restaurants, give me what I want. A chance to step outside and be rid of the bloody lot of you. A cup of coffee and a Cigerette or cigar, it is like a few moments of heaven.

I quit smoking 3 years ago , and since then food taste better, things smell better (including my house and my clothes) I have more energy, I don't cough my brains out anymore. I feel a lot better since I quit. Oh yeah I smoked for 20 years and how I quit was prayer and the help from God.

When I walk into a smoke filled room my throat closes up and I can't breathe. Because of this I will not date and have a hard time being friends with someone who smokes.
