Yes it is true, depending on the age of the baby. A infant that is unable to move well could suffocate if the blanket gets on his face while asleep. An older baby who can move around well and turn over may be ok.

There is some evidence that using a lot of blankets may contribute to an increased risk of SIDS. It is suggested that instead of adding an extra blanket for warmth that you dress the baby in a heavier pair of pajamas and use a lightweight blanket if extra warmth is needed or a sleep sack. I have been a mom for 27 years and have provided daycare in my home for 20 years. I have used blankets on all the infants I have cared for with no problems. Use care to keep the baby's face uncovered and check on a sleeping baby every 15-20 minutes. It is very rare for a baby to suffocate while sleeping and it most often happens when a baby is sleeping on an unsafe place such as a couch, an adult bed, or on another soft surface where a child can get stuck.

My husband and I think the no blanket thing is insane too. We live in the midwest and it is damn cold in winter even with the heat on. We always used a blanket on our baby. Granted we did not use anthing thick and heavy, but used a nice light fleecy baby blanket. We never found her with her head under it. They do sell those sleep sacks and did have a few of those and used them as well. Just dont put any pillows in the crib ever, and no toys for a while.

ok here goes im a pediatric nurse for 21 years I have never ever had a baby suffocate from a blanket. However do not put a PILLOW in a crib of an infant. the baby can sink into the pillow and obstruct his airway. pillow for baby's under 2 is a definite no no
I hope this helped

well, that's kind of a broad question--we wrap our newborn tightly in a swaddling blanket, and that's obviously appropriate. But it is true that you are not supposed to give babies loose blankets until they are past the age of SIDS (one year I believe, not that mine ever kept a blanket on them anyhow) because they can get their face too far in it and smother/cause SIDS. Most people use a blanketsleeper, or a sleep-sack, available at Babies R Us, etc, when their baby is too old to be swaddled and starts moving around in it's sleep.

Yes, most babies don't need blankets or pillows to sleep with until they're about 2 years old. Use the blanket sleepers if you're afraid your wee one is too cold. My four have all used the blanket sleepers until they're about 4-5 yrs old! I love them!

They recommend not to put blankets in a crib with newborn as it may be related to SIDS or suffocation.

It's a possibility yes. If the baby grabs the blanket and it could cover his/her face. They baby could suffocate.
