1) "Vincent" - Don McLean: A ballad about Vincent Van Gogh's suicide and the pain of mental illness and acute sensitivity.
2) "Luka" - Suzanne Vega: Extremely depressing song about child abuse.
3) "Alone Again, Naturally" - Gilbert O'Sullivan: Man is left at altar, then his father dies, then his mother dies, then he decides to throw himself off a building. Unrelenting grimness.
4) "Fire and Rain" - James Taylor: Nice imagery in this song about a friend's suicide and his own train wreck of a life.
5) "The Needle and the Damage Done" - Neil Young: A memorable guitar lick starts this song about the heroin overdose and death of one of Young's band members.
6) "Tears in Heaven" - Eric Clapton's lament about the death of his son who fell to his demise from the window of his mother's flat.
7) "The River" - Bruce Springsteen: About a hopeless Blue Collar worker with bad work prospects, a dreadful marriage and no hope. Lifetime Achievement Award: Bruce Springsteen: all of his songs are depressing.
8) "At Seventeen" Janis Ian: Sad song about a lonely homely girl in High School looking back over all things that she had already missed, and speculating about her bleak future, because of her lack of pulchritude.
9) "One" - Metallica: This song is based upon one of the world's most depressing novels, Dalton Trumbo's, "Johnny Got His Gun" It is a stream of conscious song about a blind, deaf and dismembered war veteran. Here are some of the lyrics:
"Now the world is gone I'm just one
Oh God, help me
Hold my breath as I wish for death
Oh please God, help me
Darkness imprisoning me
All that I see
Absolute horror
I cannot live
I cannot die
Trapped in myself
Body my holding cell
Land-mine has taken my sight
Taken my speech
Taken my hearing
Taken my arms
Taken my legs
Taken my soul
Left me with life in hell"
Ugh.
10) "Seasons in the Sun" - Terry Jacks - based on a translation of Jacques Brel song "Le Moribond." This is one of the worst songs ever performed but I guess you have to include a song about a dying man saying good bye to his friend, father and girlfriend. Any song that begins "Good bye, my love, it's hard to die ..." I guess belongs on the list.

OMG Michael Hutchence solo cd he made before he died is one of the most depressing works I have ever heard. Pretty much every song on there is a downer and a precursor to his taking his life...man that's sad!
A Straight Line from the cd is an example:
A straight line
Hutchence/Gill
Yeah we're just watching history
Now that the dogs are barking
Take a picture for your children
Make it real in FujiColor
Life in the junkyard's hard
Even when the dogs are sleeping
But if you win you lose the next spin
Madame, monsieurs, rien ne va plus
I watch the black and white bleeding
Don't you know the pain I'm in
I've been working all week
I've been thinking on my feet
And I've come to the end of my losing streak
Take a straight line
Take a straight line
Take a straight line
Take a straight line
Wave goodbye to your innocence
Sell it to the highest bidder
In a tight spot call for assistance
Is that American Express?
Get me out of here
I watch the black and white bleeding
Don't you know the pain I'm in
I've been working all week
I've been thinking on my feet
And I've come to the end of my losing streak
Take a straight line
Take a straight line
Take a straight line
Take a straight line
I'm up the top, looking down
Everybody looks just like ants
It would be so easy

Lyrics for: Timothy
Trapped in a mine that had caved in
And everyone knows the only ones left
Were Joe and me and Tim
When they broke through to pull us free
The only ones left to tell the tale
Were Joe and me
Timothy, Timothy, where on earth did you go?
Timothy, Timothy, God why don't I know?
Hungry as hell no food to eat
And Joe said that he would sell his soul
For just a piece of meat
Water enough to drink for two
And Joe said to me, "I'll have a swig
And then there's some for you."
Timothy, Timothy, Joe was looking at you
Timothy, Timothy, God what did we do?
I must have blacked out just around then
'Cause the very next thing that I could see
Was the light of the day again
My stomach was full as it could be
And nobody ever got around
To finding Timothy
Timothy...
The song is all about cannibalism.

Wow.
I think almost alll songs of Smiths and Morissey.
"Everyday is like sunday, everyday is silent and gray"
"I was look for a job and when I find the job, heavens knows I´m miserable now"
"Girlfriend in a coma, I know, I know, it's serious,"
"There's a club, if you'd like to go
You could meet somebody who really loves you
So you go, and you stand on your own
And you leave on your own
And you go home, and you cry
And you want to die".
"Last night I dreamt
That somebody loved me
No hope, no harm
Just another false alarm"
Is it enough?

quite a few of greendays ones (technically their album 'American idiot' is classifed as 'pop rock' or 'wuss rock' or whichever u'd prefer)
I find the Song 'Whats her name' Very depressing tbh i also find "Boulevard of broken dreams' depressing as well.
BUT IF U WANT DEPRESSING then there is ... the plague ... dance music, i only tolerate it cos a lot of my friends listen to it ... i find a large lot of it depressing cos some of these ppl r being payed thousands of pounds to say the same thing over and over again and maybe press a few keys on a keyboard(synthasiser) in a repeated way also, its lame thb it sucks
