Apple is undoubtably the most notable portable audio player maker. I find their players to be very easy-to-use and slylish. However, some argue about the price which can be steep, but especially now, I don't think that is a major problem.
SanDisk's players are also very nice. Their e200 series looks very attractive and is loaded with tons of features. It can be had for less then the iPod nano, which you might want to consider.
The only other big name worth mentioning is Creative. If you want a full-size, video-capable player then you might want to check out the Creative Zen:M. If you are looking for something in the likes of the nano then you might want to look at the Creative Zen V.

definately Creative.
It depends on what you want in your mp3 palyer. Music?Vid? sound quality?price?
For just the basic music and photos, the Creative Zen Microphoto is the best. Really. Its small (about 3.5''x2.3'') beautiful screen OLED (Organic LED)(......?????.......) store a tons of music --8 gb, so its pretty godo on size.--
comes in a bunch of colors, very lightweight, the company is fan-freakin-tastic to work with when you got problems with it. theres a million extra features (built-in mic to record stuff, FM radio, playlist capable)works great w/ windows media player, works w/ P2P and all major music download companies, touchpad and not a button or knob system -adjustable-, sound quality rocks, mabye a dozen color thems to choose from.... the list goes on.....)
to me, iPods are a waste of $$$. Creative or Sony or Rio are the best choices. happy hunting.

get an ipod mini.... they are the best and it hold 1000 songs and you can get it cheap on ebay.
