It's not unusual for water to accumulate in a skimmer over winter and turn into a mass of ice. The solution is to use either a Gizmo (product you buy at a pool store) or you can go the no cost route and save 10 bucks by using anything that's squishable, put into the skimmer. Lawn tractor inner tube, empty chemical bottles, closed cell foam block etc. The gizmo, if you go that route, has a 1 1/2 inch and 2 inch threaded plug built into basically a plastic bottle, that will fit most suction holes in most ( not all) skimmers. The thread on the gizmo still needs to be T taped.
The important thing is that by having something in the skimmer that squishes, that object takes the pressure of the ice forming and not the skimmer. I've never had a skimmer crack in 15 years on 450 pools per year that we winterize using either method north of Toronto.

i used to live in upstate ny........gads...my mom had a pool and one year she left water in the skimmer by accident, think of your ice cube tray, if the plastic is strong enough it will hold, but due to skimmers.....not....the pressure in them expands so much it casuses it to either burst the container, or casue damage to the pool liner as well due to the expansion of the ice in the skimmer..drain it out , save yourself some money...
