Is it because of the low intelligence of the average movie-goer? people just like to see things go fast or blow up? people will pay for whatever crap they put in the theaters?

For reals. I keep renting old movies cause all this new crap coming out sucks. I don't even go to the movie theaters as much as I used too because I hate wasting money on crap that will come out on video. Even the big blockbusters are gettin crappier. I heard that some films do "dumb it up" for American viewers because people will not understand it. They did some report on this subject on 20/20 or Dateline? It's pretty sad.

I don't think it is the low intelligence of the movie goer, I think it is the people at the studios thinking we have a low intelligence level. Take television.....it is no different there. Lame, lame, lame. If it weren't for books and my computer, I would be up a creek without a paddle, because I do not watch TV except for the local news. Forget the national news, but that is another subject.

I think 80% is a bit too low. I'd go as far as 90% at times. To start out with, some movies just don't appeal to what you like as a person. Taste varies from person to person, so automatically some of the movies that come out won't appeal to you. Out of the genres of movies that you like, some won't have a good plot, or will have an actor that gets on your nerves, or will just plain suck.

Dear Doug
Lots of people out there agree with you:
Sounds like you need to stop watching Hollywood /mainstream films and explore independent/European films.
It should be easy to get on video these two:
Cyrano de Bregerac
Jesus of Montreal
Don't be put off by the subtitles, after 5 mins your brain will be assimilating them and you won't even notice them.
Bollywood films are also formulaic, but make a change from Hollywood!

question answers (answered in the order that you asked) :
because they make remakes of things and don't do a good job...and they have been coming up with stupid ideas for movies because they have run out of good ideas!
no, its not because of low intelligence! jeeeez
yes, i think that is true because that is our society today...men (and i guess some women) like fast cars and like to see stuff blow up
yeah...people will pay for just about anything if it has an actor in it that they like!!

Well... maybe 80% is too high, I agree there are many movies that come out that seem ridiculous. I think a lot of consumers today will pay to see anything because they're board.

hey ....... i had rather watch a unpretentious low intelligence crap like the terminator than to sit through 3 hours of highly intelligence pretentious artistic piece of crap like magnolia. i had movie phobia for years after watching that piece of sh it.

so when you talk about the intelligence of the average movie-goer, keep this in mind ............. TO EACH HIS OWN CRAP!

yeah 70% is more accurate....but there seems to be some good movies coming out soon like......Children of men?! But it's true that great movies like Forrest Gump, etc are rare these days!

It's because we've already made every kind of movie possible so there is no other ideas for movies anymore, so they just make stupid movies that make no sense and are really lame!

Hollywood is so bottom line oriented, that they're driven by the idea of appealing to the lowest common denominator to sell more tickets.
