the head gasket blew and we replaced it, now the timing is off, how do we set the timing right?

Is the distributor reinstalled correctly? You need a timing light to set it correctly.

Assuming the timing chain is in the correct position and the spark plugs are wired in the correct order, rotate the engine until the #1 piston is all the way up on the compression stroke. This is done with the valve cover off so you can see the two valves on the #1 cylinder criss-cross as you manually rotate the engine. Make sure the timing mark on the crank pulley is at zero. Now take off the distributor cap and observe the position of the rotor. It should lie directly under the #1 spark plug terminal. If it isn't, move the distributor until it does. If you have spark, compression, and fuel, that old 22R will come to life.

do you have a timing light? if you don't i suggest you get one is not that expensive. or you just loose distributor bolt and start turning little bit at a time.
