i have come up with a new case idea for the 5th generation ipod, i wanna copyright it, and get it out there and make hundreds of them and sell them and make lots of money. How do i get started and were do i begin.??

To protect an original invention OR a significant improvement to an existing product, a patent would be filed. Here's the USPTO's definition: http://www.uspto.gov/web/offices/pac/doc/general/index.html#patent

NOLO is a great, free informational site. Also, be sure to read what the USPTO (United States Patent & Trademark Office) has to say about patents.

Associations may be a good avenue to explore. These organizations will address many of the thoughts, questions and concerns you'll inevitably have as well as many you haven't anticipated yet. See the source box for some relevant links.

Research, research, research – this cannot be stressed enough. Read as much as you can. Here are some book titles that are relevant:

You are looking for a patent. First, you do a patent search to make sure that no one else has already patented it. Most likely many elements have already been patented, but you may be able to distinguish your idea. Then, you file a detailed description of your idea and file it in the patent office (patent pending). They you try to sell it. Since you started out asking about "copyrights", filing a patent may be beyond you. Costs about $10,000 to hire a patent firm to do it for you. Good luck.
