Most polls of historians usually list Lincoln, Washington, and FDR as the three greatest presidents. It's difficult to say which of these three is the greatest because they faced different challenges and different time periods. Without a doubt, one of the these three is the 'best' president.

Washington helped build the nation when it was still a weak and vulnerable network of states and local governments. Without Washington's guidance, both in the Revolutionary War and throughout his presidency, it is entirely possible the United States would have failed, and become nothing more than an idealist dream.

Lincoln held the nation together at its darkest point, when was literally splitting itself apart. Many issues Lincoln faced in the Civil War were the result of unresolved disputes from colonial days, such as slavery. Without Lincoln, the United States would most likely be two seperate, and much weaker, nations today.

FDR had two great challenges, first the Great Depression and then World War II. Seperately, either of these challenges would have consumed any president, but overcoming both of these truly speaks of FDR's immeasurable contributions to the United States.

Personally, I feel Lincoln was the greatest of these three. More than the other two, Lincoln dealt with personal loss during his presidency, included the death of his own children. Even with this, Lincoln was able to guide the nation through the horrors and self destruction of the Civil War, and bring the nation back to a unified government. Look at a picture of Lincoln in 1861, and then look at one of Lincoln in 1865. Every president ages more than nature would intend during his presidency, but no presidential portrait shows more strain or weariness than Lincoln's.

All three of the presidents contributed greatly to the development and continuing growth and survival of the United States. Their efforts can truly not be measured on any scale, but only appreciated for the self sacrifice they demonstrate.

I would say Jimmy Carter. He made more friends for the USA than enemies. John Kennedy was all right, too.
I think Ronald Reagan was a disgrace. A total moron who allowed himself to be played like a puppet by his corporate elite masters.

I judge a leader by whether he added to the sum total of human suffering or whether he alleviated it somewhat.

Probably Abraham Lincoln. Lincoln dealt with what was arguably the greatest crisis in our nation's history. Our country was literally split in two, and could very well have stayed that way had Lincoln or another like-minded individual have been in office. Not only did he lead our succsesful Union effort to bring the Confederacy to an end but he also emancipated the slaves.

Reagan and Clinton both were nice guys, but history's still out on them. Reagan was sorta an anti-communist nutcase, and involved in Iran-Contra; but still a brilliant, kind and loveable leader. Clinton was an adulterer, and caught up in a bevy of scandals; but a great and charismatic leader as well. Give it another 20 years or so before you start saying they're the greatest of all time however.
