Give a man a good parcel and he'll eat for a day, give a man a spade and he'll eat for a year - ?.... something like that and the source is a charity I believe

It's a derivation of the Chinese proverb about fish, but was used by a charity and ended something like "Give a man a spade and he'll eat for life".

Well, I have heard "give a man a fish, and he'll eat for a day. Teach him to fish and he will eat for a lifetime."

That's the only version I have heard.
