Relax people, ever heard of submersable filters? They are just like powerheads with a filter cartridge attached and they are designed to go under water cord and all. I have owned a few and have not had problems, ecxept when you clean them as you have to stick your hand in the aquarium to get them out.
They are fully waterproof, and shouldn't have a large voltage as filter pumps run on a magnetic pulse.

Some are submersible and some are not. Read the instructions. Come on people has no one ever seen a heater that is submersible? Thier the most popular thing on the market and thier cord goes under the water.

I have powerheads just like that other guy. Mine said all over the packaging NOT to submerse the cord. All my other filters powercords come no where near the water.

Look veeery carefully at the instruction manual. Some filters go at the top of tanks, some you need to sink to the bottom.
I'm guessing you need to attach it to the top-side or something, without actually submerging the wire.

I personally invest the money to get yourself a new filter. I don't know what it is you have (nor the size of your aquarium), but peace of mind in this hobby is half the trick.

I wouldn`t plug it in.That sounds very dangerous.Take the filter to a petstore and ask someone that knows before using it.

its probably the pump... there is usually a tube that will run off it. the tube goes into the water to the actual filter itself.

As long as it says submersible, you are fine. Without saying exactly what type it is, it is impossible to say for sure.
