Nirvana had just hit the scene in 1990, so bands like Soundgarden and Smashing Pumpkins were fast gaining in popularity in the early '90s. Late '80s had seen Guns N Roses and Def Leppard (I think Pour Some Sugar On Me gained popularity in 1989), so although those bands were on their way out, they still had a lot of airplay in the early '90s as well.
