i'm drawing a total blank, since this is an assigned homework problem for p-chem and i don't have a calculus book handy.

dz usually stands for the derivitive of z.
(I don't have your book so I can't be sure)

dz in respect to what? X or Y? it should be find dz/dx or dz/dy not just find dz.

dz/dx= 1/(1+y^2)

dz/dy= -2xy/(1+y^2)^2.
