....or at least someone who has actual experience with a similar condition. My mom, who is 79, went to the doctor for vaginal bleeding about 3 months ago. They performed an ultrasound and, then, a D&C. No cancer or even pre-cancer was found in the lab work. However, now she has started having the bleeding again. The doctor had told her that if she started bleeding again, she would probably need a hysterectomy. Why would this be if there is no cancer? What are other things that could be wrong? Should she get a second opinion? A hysterectomy sounds awfully invasive and risky for a woman her age, especially when there were no cancerous cells found. Any help would be appreciated.

One more detail....she has been on tamoxifen for a couple of years for breast cancer. I know that can cause issues in the uterus.

It could be the medicine that she is on like you said or she could have something else like endometriosis...which im not sure it older people get that or not but it is a possibiliy i would say get some more test done to try to find the problem.....a hysterectomy is invasive for just having done what she had done...I would run some more test or a second opinion and see what could be found good luck and god bless

Other things besides cancer can cause vaginal bleeding. Uterine fibroid, infection, thyroid, liver, kidney abnormalities, clotting problems, polyps. However, unless the cause is pre-cancerous or cancerous, hysterectomy should only be an option after other solutions have been tried. One solution includes the D&C so if the bleeding is continuing than hysterectomy may be the only option at this point.

sadly the doctors may just feel that at 79 her uterus is better out than in and is just cancer waiting to happen.
