Cancun vacation?
------------------------------...
I am thinking of going to Cancun for my vacation in january with my son who is 2. 5 years old. I just wanted to ask you opinion. I always had this idea that perhaps Mexico is not a safe place to go to?
Is it safe for me to go there alone with a young child?
have you ever been there.
What would be the best affordable alternative?
Thank you all.

Cancun is very Americanized and safe. However with any destination or even going downtown to a big city in the US you have to use common sense when traveling.

Because it is only you and a young child going, the right hotel to keep your young one entertained is going to be ideal. I would get a good all inclusive then you don't have to leave the resort if you don't want to. Cancun is going to be the most economical choice most likely, but this depends on where you are flying from as well.

I was just in Cancun in May doing hotel inspections of 14 hotels to check out after the horrible damage last years hurricane left behind. They are doing quite well actually, some hotels aren't finished yet. As in any destination there are ones I would recommend and ones I would highly suggest not to stay in. This is a great reason to go through a travel agent instead of trying to do it on your own. We can match you with the right property for you and your son.

If you are considering going this Jan. I would check into this right away to get better pricing advance is the best way to go. Also are you aware of the new passort requirements? You and your son will need a passport. This goes into effect Jan 8th 2007 for Mexico, Caribbean, Canada, Puerto Rico, S. America, Bermuda, etc. All International travel now requires that passport. It is for security purposes is the reason for this new law. Because there are several people rushing to get a passport, apply for one right away to try and avoid expediting the passport which can run anywhere from 60 - 75 dollars (unsure of the rates currently as I did mine years ago).

If I can assist you with travel feel free to email me and I can send you my contact info. If you already have the travel taken care of or a favorite agent you work through I wish you the best of travels to Mexico it really is a fun country!

It's nice and it's safe.

Try an all inclusive so that your child has fun. I'll recomend that if you don't speak spanish get all turistic recommendations from you houtel's personnel.

Visit Xcaret and Xelha also. It's amazing, safe and very close. You'll be able to visit ruins and swim among colorful fish in safe shallow clear waters. They also have swim with the dolphins pools.

Stay within the turistic areas (not because it wouldn't be safe, but because you might get lost easily.)

CANCUN SEEMS A NICE CHOICE FOR A WOMAN WITH A CHILD. ANY PLACE IS SAFE IF YOU USE COMMON SENSE AND STICK TO FAMILY ORIENTED ACTIVITIES. WE STAYED AT THE MELIA HOTEL AND HAD A WONDERFUL TIME WITH THE CHILDREN. THE BEACH IS GREAT.

I think it is pretty safe, but it is a tourist trap. Outside the city limits is severe poverty. Also, you have to be very careful what you eat and drink. It is a beautiful country but it is also very poor, keep this in mind.
