no it was not hal Holbrook It was an actor by the name of Hal LINDEN.. (whom I believe passed away awhile back) the series was Barney Miller a sit com about cops and it took place in the squad room. Fish (played by Abe Vigoda) was one of the detectives it was pretty good I watched it alla time
