I couldnt sleep last night from all the noise, felt so sorry for her. Is it true the male has a spikey organ and doesnt remove it from her until he is done? Ahem...

The vixen's wail
This is a long, drawn-out, monosyllabic, and rather eerie wail most commonly made during the breeding season; it is widely thought that it is made by a vixen in heat summoning dog-foxes. Contrary to common belief, however, it is also made by the males, evidently serving some other purpose as well. This noise fits into neither the contact nor the interaction group.

Copulation is loud and short, usually lasting no more than 20
seconds.

The bulbus glandis is an erectile tissue structure unique among mammals to the penis of species in the family Canidae.

After the male dog mounts and penetrates the biitch, the bulbus glandis becomes engorged with blood. It forms a spherical structure at the base of the penis, proximal to the os penis. There is a corresponding ridge of erectile tissue in the biitch's vagina; when this becomes engorged behind the engorged bulbus glandis, the penis is trapped within the vagina. This forms a seal to hold the semen within the biitch's reproductive tract, and prevents the couple from separating during copulation when the male turns away from the female.

It is known colloquially as the "knot".

Well I think that that answers just about all your question..... as for feeling sorry for the female fox, well I wouldn't if I were you... the sound may not have been coming from only her and since copulation lasts about 20 seconds I am sure she was just fine LOL Also in reality you should be happy for the vixen because she will now be able to pass on her genes to a new generation of foxes and she may only have one chance in her life to do so.. that is the reason why the foxes penis and vixens vagina swell and trap them together, to ensure conception. Truth is neither of them let the other go until they are both "finished" LOL

They do make a hell of a racket don't they. My neighbour and I thought a woman was being attacked behind a block of flats one night. we both grabbed some lumps of wood from a skip, rushed round the corner ............ oops!!

I know cats have a spiked "organ", I'm not sure about foxes. Dogs have one that swells up afterwards, so they stay locked together for 10 or 15 minutes. The idea is to make sure their squigglies have a head start if the female is a bit of a trollope.

I don't think it's anything to do with pain. Foxes are very noisy creatures, dogs and vixens. They do shreik and howl for hours when mating. It is quite disconcerting.

Vixen's don't - it is the dog fox. At the end of coitus, the female clamps on the male (and her muscles there are strong) and it hurts. A lot by the sound of it.

If they're anything like dogs yes, and it is a rather painful experiance. But if you can hear the foxes does that mean you are a fellow farmer or country bumpkin? I usually just go out there with a gun.

If you think foxes are loud listen to hedgehogs going at it! They sound like really loud pigs rather than tiny spiky things.
