It depends on how many lineman the defensive line has. Typically the defense line on the outside are called defensive end and the inside linemen are call the defensive tackles. The defensive tackle who lines up often opposite of the center (hiker) on office is often called the nose guard and/or nose tackle because he is places at the center of the line right over the ball.

If there is a 3-4 defense(3 linemen and 4 linebackers) the positions on the line Is 2 defensive ends, left end and right end; and nose tackle.
If there is a 4-3 defense(4 linemen and 3 linebackers) there is 2 defensive ends and two defensive tackles. The tackles are always in the middle, and the defensive ends are on the sides. The defensive linemen can either be in a 3 point stance(one hand on the ground) or some with a 4 point stance(two hands on the ground.)
