When you allow an Active X to install and run you are pretty much going on faith that the program was developed properly and with good intentions. Active X is simply a program that is installed and runs on your computer. If you run an active x from a site like Yahoo, Microsoft, you are probably not going to have any problems because they have reputations at risk. The worst case might be that they transmit statistics or personal information about how you used the active x. If you install an active x from a site you don't know or trust then you are probably asking for trouble. They could write code to spy on you, to use your computer without your permission to do illegal things, delete or corrupt files.... you get the idea.

It's all about which sites you trust. A leap of faith.

Of the two sites you mention-- I think you are safe as far as malicious code goes. Your main concern with well known and respected sites is privacy.

Not all active X applications are BAD, If you are at a site that you know is legit, like MySpace, and Yahoo, then it is okay to allow the active x to install and run. If you go to a site that you are unsure of, then DONT allow it to install. Hope that helps...

ActiveX controls are needed for some functions in websites. You have to know the website and make sure the ActiveX control is signed. If you do not know or trust the website, then don't accept the ActiveX. I accept the ActiveX controls from Yahoo and have no problems. If your computer is properly updated with Windows Updates, the security program will notify you it blocked an unsigned ActiveX control. My local paper tries to put one on my computer that is unsigned and XP SP2 blocks it every time and tells me.

Its a way of getting virus/trojan/worm and spy-ware on your pc, thats why norton stops it.
