They are usually very good at protecting the fry. You can consider an aquarium divider to keep the other fish away. Fish traps aren't that good as water quality in them can be a problem.

Definitely put mum away from other fish, not only will they eat the eggs, they will also eat the young `fry` as soon as they evolve and will continue to do so, just as long as the fish remain small enough. Sometimes even mum does this herself. You can get a `floating nursery`which is about 4inches square, it is basically a net box with tiny plastic supports; you keep it in the same tank, but it allows the `fry` swim in safety, until they are large enough to have the freedom of the main tank.

Most catfish lay eggs on the sides of the tank. Other fish will eat them, so unless you are wanting to raise the catfish you would want to keep them seperated. Good Luck!

GO TO THE FISH STORE AND GET A SMALL PLASTIC TANK THAT WILL FIT INSIDE YOUR TANK, THIS TANK WILL HAVE A V SHAPE IN THE MIDDLE OF IT,WHEN THE FISH GIVES BIRTH THE FISH WILL DROP THROUGH THE V AND BE PROTECTED FROM THE MOTHER . IF SHE STAYS IN THE TANK YOU HAVE HER IN WHEN SHE GIVES BIRTH THE OTHER FISH WILL EAT THEM.

So, you are not sure who is the father? I am sure that has happened to many perfectly nice catfish. It will be OK, there are many options available to unwed mothers now. Just try to be supportive.

When the eggs hatch, just make sure the mother is taken out, she will eat them! Put the father in, than remove him in a few weeks because then he will eat them. Than they sould be fine.
