ROBIN HOOD WAS A GOOD GUY TAKING FROM THE RICH AND GIVING TO THE POOR. THERE'S A DIFFERENCE.

Don't forget all the other people who were convicted of crimes who people nowerdays look favourably upon:
- Sokrates of Athens
- Saint Joan of Arc
- Jesus Christ
- Oscar Wilde
and so on. Law breakers the lot of them.

Have you ever seen the Krays film? They are painted as real nasty pieces of work, proper maniacs. I don't think the film idolises them any more than the Superman films idolised Lex Luther.
And there is a good chance that Robin Hood was a fictional person who never really existed.

They do what all of us wish we could, they do what ever they want! Petty criminals are just that, petty, not worth pissing on if they're on fire. When a criminal becomes legend, when his/her deeds step so far outside our own lives, we become fascinated, almost enthralled by these people who are living lives so alien to our own that we can't help but admire them!
As many have mentioned, Robin Hood was a good guy. The Krays only killed other gangsters and many in the east end of London were upset when they were finally banged up, as at least they kept the streets safe! (Unless you were another criminal!)
Serial killers grab our imaginations as we find it hard to believe that anyone could do what some of these people do.
I had the good fortune to meet Buster Edwards (The great train robber) before he died, and over a cup of tea, asked him if he had any regrets.
"Getting caught!" was his answer!

We all wish we could buck the system, most of us don't have the nerve!

That would mostly be the media's fault. Screenwriters, producers, etc. like to put usually good men into situations against very bad people where the only possible solution is violence, usually bordering or crossing into criminal activities. It's seen as okay by most people because it shows that even the best of people occassionally have to stand up and fight for something important to them.
Most real criminals (and by that I, of course, mean the ones we see on the news) are never protrayed in a good light. I've seen several movies based off of the lives of Gacy, Manson, Dahmer, etc. and never are they excused from what they have done. Should Columbine ever has a movie on it (NOT Bowling for Columbine, but more like Monster) I don't believe that the kids will be put in a fair light, either.
Most of the movies that show criminals as the actual good guys have a tie in about how they are doing something good for themselves, their families, their communities, etc. Its the classic question of "Is doing some bad for good, good?" Which, oddly enough, is similar to "How many licks does it take to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop?" in that the world may never know.

The 2 criminals I idolise are .. Jonny "Mad Dog" Adair & Mr Crime himself ..Kenny Knoye... Why..? because they have a certain who gives a fthuck attitude and they love to mess with the minds of the System.. Kenny Knoye reminds me of Raffles - a gentleman Gangster..and Jonny adair is a real funny guy who has his 2 fingers up at the law and still has a laugh...

If a person does something that is in shock or awe, people will talk about that person & what they did. If it's a bad crime that a person committed they will be talked about, but have a a bad reputation. This is known as being "notorious". This doesn't mean that the person is idolized, just because they are being talked about. There are however people who do idolize these bad criminals. People that do that are just "nuts". There are alot of weird people out there.

It depends what kind of criminals they are. Have you ever seen Boondock Saints? The brothers were big criminals but they were also doing good in a way.

Anyone who does something spectacular is idolised. Criminals just do spectacular 'negative' things and we are simply captivated.
Have you ever wondered why crowds form around a car accident or a fight? we are just captivated....
