The century is the year it ends. 1601-1700 is the 17th century. That is because the first year was 1. 1-100 was the first century.

Everything goes up a number...we are in the 21st century....the 1900s were the 20th century...therefore the 1600s were the 17th century...kinda fruity...but thats the way it goes.

It would be the 17th century.

Just remember: The century is 1 ahead of the year's first two digits.

Example: 1866, would be in the 19th century.
