We did our first water change today (partial only) and things did not go well. Poor guy jumped and landed on the table, jumped again, and ended up on the floor (which is not very clean) for a few minutes! Well, I scooped him into his little temporary bowl, and he started swimming around fairly quickly. I let him rest there awhile and finally moved him back into his habitat.
He's still swimming around like always, and even ate some Betta flakes so I am hoping this means he'll be okay! How's it looking for my little guy, do you think? Also, advice on avoiding this incident happening again would be appreciated!

Oh, I should note that the net was the whole problem!! I scooped him up in it, and he jumped right out! I think we're going to have to do a cup next time, with another cup to cover it--that's how I finally got him settled in the temproary tank.
His regular habitat does have a lid, as does his temporary tank. It just was the transfer that caused problems.
Also, I use a water conditioning tablet with stress guard/slime coat protection so hopefully that will help too. :)

Be sure his water is happy (No ammonia or nitrIte and low nitrAtes) and keep an eye on him.
Is his tank covered? bettas are bad about jumping.
You can use some plastic craft mesh to cover the bowl.

here's a good article on keeping bettas.

Happens all the time, don't worry, he'll be fine.
Get some Stress-Zyme from the pet store. It helps the fishies make the "slime coat" over their scales that they need to be healthy and comfortable. Ask the store employees for it. It's not necessary though, they do just fine without it.
To avoid this in the future, scoop him out with a cup or ladle first, before you start pouring the water out. If you use the same one everytime and feed him right after the water change, he will get used to the whole process and actually swim into the cup or ladle. I have a large, bent spoon that I use for all my betta and eventually when they see the scoop coming at them they swim right in, no problem.

don't worry, he'll be fine. It happens all the time when I go to the pet store to get fish, and they always live just fine. Fish can keep going as long as they're a little bit moist. If his normal bowl is pretty small, maybe you could just put some insect screen on the top when you change the water and slowly tilt it so the water drains. Then just slowly pour water in through the screen. Make sure he stays level, or he'll get all stressed out.

Bettas are tough little fish, but I would recommend using a net in the future, and then place something over the temporary bowl you put him in, I always used saran wrap with a few holes punched in it for air, cause it won't take long to do your water change. I think he will be fine, you also might want to get some stress coat, it helps to replenish the slime coat they lose when they are moved with a net. Good Luck!

He should be fine. I lost one of mine in the sink and he's still swimming along!
If you can get a small net into his jar, use that to get him out and cover it with your hand while transferring him. Or, you can get a tank vacuum to do the changes with, then he won't have to move at all. That's what I use for my water changes and it works great.

Whatever you do, I hope everything works out!!

He should be fine. I usually just swirl the water around the container, pour half of it out and refill it with aged tap water every four days. I don't take the betta out of his bowl at all.
