I think that I shop too much. My credit card bills show it too. It seems like when I am sad or depressed my shopping is very impulsive and often. What should I do?

There is evidence that spending is attached to emotional issues about past experiences with money. The fact that you are aware of your shopping addiction is really the first step to recovery from it. You are giving yourself the power to spend by carrying those credit cards with you. Put them away. Don't close them... credit cards aren't bad but using them is. You want to keep your credit rating up by having a decent ratio of debt to credit ratio. But, if you were an alcoholic would a bar be the best place to hang out? Stay away from stores. Send someone shopping for you if you must and pay them a few bucks. It will be cheaper in the long run. Buy only what you need not what you want. I know that's easier said than done but when you look around your home, do you see purchases that you made just because??? Can you take them back? Can you sell items you really don't need and stick the money into a savings account? Do not attach an ATM card to a savings account. Make it hard to touch that money. Get out of debt by paying off what you can as quickly as you can by using cash only. Forget about those darn credit cards. When you add the interest to your purchases, you are paying far more for items than you should. Shop around when you do have to shop for things. Put the savings into that savings account. You may not think $1 or $2 is important but it adds up. Work on those emotional issues you have and realize that you have the power to overcome them.

Just like any other addiction in life...

1. Acknowledge that you have an addiction.
2. Develop "pain" associated with your addiction.
3. Develop a "pleasure" with beating your addicition
4. QUIT COLD TURKEY!!! You can stay out of stores for months (except grocery stores of course).

It is all about how strong you are. I would highly recommend Tony Robbins - Personal Power. He has a number of books on tape about this subject. You can find his stuff used online for an affordable price (I know you're still buying something, but consider it your last "splurge")

whenever you go to the store, make a list of what you absolutely need and how much you are willing to spend on it. absolutely do not deviate from that list for ANY reason. try paying cash for everything and stop using a credit card, or use a debit card instead. don't be stupid and live outside of your means, there is a great deal of honor, respect and dignity in living frugally and well within your means. realize that you are not what you buy.

Change the way you think...

Why not look at what you are going to buy and think of how long you must work to pay for it,., Is it then worth it ???

And instead of thinking you deserve all this crap you are shopping for, don't you deserve to have money in the bank and be debt free ? I know I do and I choose to have money rather than all the crap it buys !

Find a hobby. Shopping isn't healthy if you do it all the time.
