You must have energy to perform work - you don't necessarily perform work if you have energy.

Potential energy is not work, kinetic energy is work.

Work is the product of a force acting on an object through a distance along the direction of the force.

ie: E = work = Fs*cos(theata), where s is the distance, F is the force, the cos(theata) is needed for cases where the direction of the force is not the same as the direction the object moves.

Energy is the ability to do work, (whether or not work is done is not the point.)

It does take energy to do work

If you lift a 100 pound weight one foot, you have performed work (applied a force to move the weight a vertical distance) and you have increased the potential energy of the weight by 100 foot-pounds. The weight is capable of doing 100 foot-pounds of work returning to its original position. Energy was expended to raise the weight increasing its potential energy. If you do work on the weight to drag it along a rough floor, you expend energy (force times distance) that is converted to heat energy (due to friction) where the weight contacts the floor. Power is the rate at which you perform the work (foot-pounds per hour).

Work and energy are used interchangeably as far as I know.
Power is how much energy is changed over time.
Or power is how much work is done over time.

work is the amount of force required to move an object.
energy is an amount in joules or kilojoules taken to move that particular object
