Computer Engineering.. Let me give you some inside infomation :)
First of all if you want to be a qualified computer engineer, you should dare to have constant, chronic 'back aches', heartburn due to caffeine and wearing thick glasses. (glasses part is a little bit optimist since LCD screens are widespread and cheap today).
Let me tell you what you would study in college; Mathematics (esp. Calculus), Physics, Chemistry (these courses are related to Engineering part), Computer part? You will be taught one programming language (generally it is C++ or C) explicitly, rest of the languages? they will give you homeworks about those ones (e.g. Java, HTML, CGI, PHP, Perl etc.) and you will learn those by yourself. Some electronics courses about semi-conductors will be taught. Software engineering, Principles of Logic Design, Operating Systems (one hell of a course, very difficult), Data Structures, Computer Graphics, Computer Security, Computer Networking etc.etc.
Work?? Well your working conditions depend on what specialities you have. Programming? Networking? Security? Graphics? Algorithms (computer scientists deal with it) Internet Technologies? Comp. Electronics? etc. I am a network engineer (CCNP) and i think it is the most 'fun involved' area about computers :)
Peace

It's a lot of fun if you like working with your hands. I have always enjoyed working on cars and computers and somewhat consider them to be similar only you don't get quite as dirty working on a computer.
I never liked the programing part. was to boreing for me with the exception of webpage design (html) it's a little more interesting im my opinion but everyone has their own likes and dislikes
There are many different areas of computers you can go into. you can have your own repair shop like i do replacing hard drives, getting rid of viruses, spyware, etc. you can work for a company just taking care of there computers, network etc.
I would say programing is probably the highest paying if it does not bore you to death like it did me.
also you really don't have to have a degree for although it is better to. there are technical schools where you can get training for different certifications and then take the certification when you are through with the course (this is the route i went). they have certifications for about every area you could want such as diffrent programing languages, hardware, software, html/java(webpage design), microsoft even offers certifications for their own software.
I would check with some of your local colleges and tech schools and see what they offer and what strikes your interest. then go from there.
Good luck.

Emphatically NO. a working laptop or laptop engineer(utility/hardware) builds structures that are used via the final public. a working laptop or laptop technician is a guy or woman experienced at repairing and maintainence of computers. maximum engineers may additionally restoration structures yet no technician can write utility or build hardware.
