I lived there for 3 years and never got a real English accent. I am told that some of the words I use sound like I am English but I do not have an overall English accent. My son, on the other hand, who was 9 at the time quick gained an English accent and on return to Australia his class mates and teachers could not understand him. It seems that the younger you are the easier it is to get an accent. He has returned to England at the age of 24 and after 2 years he has a slight accent but not as strong as when he was younger. My husband who is English has been in Australia for 30 odd years and still has an English accent.

I have no idea, I'm from New England, but when I went down to Virginia for two weeks, I picked up an accent by the end of the trip.
