I think kezz may have the right idea about the bra underwire thing being caught between the inner and outer drum had a similar problem a few years back when I loaded the machine when the missus was out shopping the wash finished without any problems but next time it was used it squealed like a stuck pig so being very mechanically minded I took the back off the drum and lo and behold a funny looking piece of sprung steel was between the two drums I had no idea what it was until mrs came home and told me it was out of her bra so removed the offending item put the machine back together and no more noise but got a verbal lashing for putting one of her pricey bra,s in the machine but in my defence it was in the laundry basket without a do not wash me label attached so it was in the end her fault as far as I am concerned as for your ariston v bosch question the quality of Bosch products is not as good as it was a few years ago I personally would go for a liebhere or bauknecht appliance nowdays Siemens are also good When I lived in Germany I had a secondhand bauknecht machine and it would just not die even after being abused and overloaded with dirty overalls and pairs of jeans it was fine but it had a very easy to get to bits of metal trap so I used to regulary clean out coins 6 mm nuts and various sized drill bits that I had left in my workclothes pockets before they could get into the pump but that was only cos the trap was at the front of the machine had it been hard to get to I would not have bothered about it so much ! anyway 4 years is not to bad !!!!!!!!!!!

For a cheap w/m its had its life (currys only brand owned by indesit) latest ones are hotpoint built for about 250 quid and same for a 5yr warrenty (curry policy is expensive but covers almost everything) so for 500 you can effectively get 5 years of worry free washing (£2 per week) the days of washing machines lasting 15yrs are long gone but w/m's have never been so cheap

Is it standing off centre. I have a bosch and it is brilliant at washing the clothes and has lasted years but still pretty noisy but I would not call it a racket. If the machine still works why spend money cant you close the kitchen door and put it on when you are not there.

I've got a "Which" washing machine test report here the 2 best Bosch machines are the WBB 24759 Logixx (£900) or the WFR2869 (£450) they didn't bother to test any Ariston Machines.

Could be two things:
1. A sock of other article has got cuaght in the workings of the machine (unlikely)
2. The bearings are starting to wear out.
You should seek the advice of someone who can fix it or contact your nearest John Lewis department store and speak to someone in the electrical department whoc could reccommend someone to fix it for you.

feel to see if the inner drum is lose if so it's the bearings if not it could be something stuck between the drums it will cost just as much either way to repair if you want a washer that reliable go for either hoover or hotpoint they are easier to get parts for as well
