Maximum competition and minimum cooperation - which is supposed to be the quintessential mechanism for survival of the fittest. But when scientifically tested, it is usually found that cooperative groups have better chances for survival than lone competitors do. The apparent exceptions, such as sharks, seem to be purely competitive, but in fact as a group, are essentially cooperative, with a pecking order, non-aggression toward other shark species, etc.

The lesson, which large factions of humans have failed to learn, is that these theories, when applied as rules of behavior, often lead to the opposite effects from those intended - economic collapse, crime, wars are all facilitated by unwarranted faith in the efficacy of any or all of the above operative concepts.
