Oh come on! No question. The first three were the real Star Wars. The new ones may be OK for the new generation but Carrie Fisher, Harrison Ford and Mark Hammill were the best.

My Star Wars order is:

The Empire Strikes Back
Revenge Of The Sith
A New Hope
The Phantom Menace
Attack Of The Clones
Return Of The Jedi

The first three could be classed as 'better' because of all the effects used but you can't touch the first release 'Star Wars - A New Hope' for its originallity and it would still stand up as a great movie if released today. A close second to New Hope would be the 3rd in the series 'Revenge of the Sith' for its deep storyline...er....i think but what do i know its only my opinion.

Just realised i've not answered the question - its the first three that were 20 yrs ahead of their time!

I was a kid when 4-6 came out and I loved them, but as an adult I have not been displeased at all with episodes1-3, I actually like the story lines better in the new ones, they are so much bigger. I mean rather than a story about like 5 people, 2 droids and a wookie, you have whole republic etc., and you can put faces on the whole thing. Granted the technology is better now, but overall-so are the movies.

The first MOVIE was the best, not the group. A simple story line with a beginning and an end. No vague ending baiting you to watch the next film. A story unto itself. All the others were entertaining, but they were more an exercise on how many new special effects they could jam into them. Even the re-release of the first movie, with new effects, was kind of cheesy. More concerned with showing off then enhancing the entertainment value of the movie.

The "first three" are much better because they had more emphasis
on the philosophical aspects of things. Stuff like the "Dark Side" and having revealed to you that your long lost father was your worst enemy really gets you thinking.

If your question was comparing individual episodes, Episode 3 Revenge of the Sith is the best one. It has an unforgettable ending sequence that gave me the chills.

I chose the "first three" as better, because of their combined strength. Episodes 1&2 really sucked, so the whole score for the "new ones" really suffered.

Hard to split them that way. I grew up enjoying the Star Wars films but I think "Return Of The Jedi" was weak in the first three (to be released) and "The Phantom Menace" was weak in the second three.

Episode 4-6 were better. they were groundbreaking. I would put all six films in this order:

Empire Strikes Back
A New Hope
Return of the Jedi
Revenge of the Sith
Attack of the Clones
Phantom Menace

The originals, naturally.

However, to split them up into two groups, out of the Original Trilogy, Episode V was the best. As for the new trilogy, Episode III was the best, namely because of the fight between Anakin and Obi-Wan and there was much less sickening romantic dialogue between Anakin and Padme.
